silent spring all over again?

March 31, 2008

Do you spray toxic pesticides on your backyard garden?  Would even consider doing so?  What if you had a neighbor who was doing just that, and the overspray drifted in through your windows?  We have that neighbor. This is a huge problem in Latin and South America where they are growing fruits and vegetables to ship to your local grocery store.  The negative effect current growing practices have on the ecosystem are significant. A wonderful piece in the New York Times reminds me that we can make a difference by purchasing organic whenever possible, or even better by purchasing from local farmers who are good neighbors and excellent stewards of the earth.  I am not sure how long this can go on. This sense of having what we want, when we want it, without consideration for the effect it has on our planet, seems to me to be unsustainable.
