how does your chicken grow?
I blog for Bloomingfoods and just posted about an excellent NYTimes editorial on the unsavory and unsustainable nature of our “industrial farm animal production.”
I became a vegetarian in 1994. I was vegan from 1996 – 1999 and then strict vegetarian until 2001 when I became pregnant with my son.
I have spent a lot of time reading and researching the issues that surround the food production in our country and the world. I feel passionately about food – it is what I do for a living. I believe that we must change how we approach food.
Eating is the most political act you make each day and it is through an awareness of this that change will happen. People must demand it or else it will simply shift in way that continues this cycle of profit driven expansion by wealthy and abusive corporations.
The change I have seen happen in the last 15 years feels small compared to the work that is yet to be done. It is a comfort to see editorials condeming the current production practices – I don’t remember this happening in 1997. It gives me hope. Tomorrow is another opportunity to teach this and make change happen and I will not miss it.
