what about eyeballs?

June 22, 2008

compliments of the chef @FARMI decided a few months ago that I was going to stop being a picky eater. Ever since childhood I have been prejudiced against a great many foods for no good reason. This limits my ability to experience amazing and unique tastes and so I have resolved myself to change.

I have been doing a pretty good job of it. Recently one small test happened when the chef sent out some complimentary salmon tartare (you simply can not insult a chef by refusing such a treat,) another when I went to a wonderful sushi restaurant with a friend, and a third opportunity when I was served some chilled mussel soup. In all of these examples I found that I actually liked the thing that I might have, 6 months ago, refused because I believed I would dislike it.

Funny – my recent examples are all fish & seafood related. Perhaps this is the universe being kind to be because I am not sure what I would do if it were beef tartare, or an odd preparation of organ meats, deep fried chicken feet, or sheep eyeballs. . . .

Would you eat eyeballs? I have been advised on an appropriate way to deal with this most delicate situation. Do not chew – just pop one in my mouth, swallow, and offer thanks. I am feeling adventerous with food and very willing to try new things but somehow I am not sure that I ever want the gift of eyeballs to reach my table.
